PLACEMAKING

Holiday Harvest Food Drive

Glittering string lights illuminate the dusk of fresh snowfall. Their warm glow reflects off the glossy white homes perched outside the grocery store entrance, their lit windows beckoning all in with the cozy warmth and joy of the holiday season.

CONCEPT

NEIGHBORHOOD PLACEMAKING > >

The Holiday Harvest is a placemaking project that transforms the routine experience of grocery shopping into an opportunity to establish deeper bonds with the community and show love to neighbors. Using a combination of custom builds, lighting, and holiday decor, a basic grocery store entry point is turned into a village wonderland and a drop-off point for food donations.

AN INTEGRATIVE FOOD DONATION EXPERIENCE < <

The design emulates popular miniature ceramic houses that often adorn fireplace mantles and tablescapes during the holiday season. By increasing the scale, it creates a sense of warmth and whimsy,

VISION

FOSTERING A SPIRIT OF INTENTIONALITY AND COMMUNITY > >

The anchoring theme is to help build up a home and create warm memories. Instead of simply donating money at the cash register, or dropping off arbitrarily chosen items for unknown families, the Holiday Harvest seeks to draw the community a little bit closer with increased personalization.

Personalization

The recipient homes are able to submit specific item requests for their unique needs or meal, instead of receiving a random assortment of items.

Food Variety

The use of collection fridges and freezers enables the homes to receive a wide variety of fresh food items alongside the typical dry good items.

Names

First names are included on the request slip so the neighbor knows exactly who they are gifting to. Last names are left off to maintain a level of privacy.

Item Cards

FOOD DRIVE LOGISTICS > >

Grocery requests will be fulfilled through item cards. Shoppers can pick up as many item cards as they would like to contribute (with item values of $5, $10, and $15) and bring it with them as they shop. The item will be purchased, and then brought back outside to be placed in the designated drop-off location.
